Silk Covered Buckram Bonnet Workshop
Conducted by Christine Ballard
Richmond, VA, April 2002
(kindly hosted by Jim Lawhon at his office's training room)

Instructor Christine Ballard explains some of the finer points of period millinery, while Bev Heath works on her bonnet and Kathryn Coombs struggles with a stuck cane in the background.

Terri Conley Adams drove from Michigan with Christine and made a stunning cherry red silk bonnet

Examples of styles of bonnet construction:

Victoria Lawhon works on a drawn bonnet

Bev Heath works on a flounced bonnet

Shopping! Christine brings millinery flowers, ribbons and other decorations from her own stash and from Victoria Louise Mercers (now closed, alas)

Bev hits the goodies bin.

"Okay, so do these leaves go with those berries or not?"
VeeVee, Kathryn and Colleen

"Hmmm. Let's figure out how to make one of these!"
Victoria Lawhon's turn to ogle the lovely sheer bonnet made by Christine that she brought as an example..

Kathryn's finished bonnet (curtain is too long, need to re-do!)

Original Bonnets from Christine's collection which she brought for display & study:
